Tamagotchi are taking over Tokyo! Here’s everything you need to know about the revival of the popular digital toy.
What is Tamagotchi?
If you were a child or young teen in the late 90s and early 2000s, you will probably remember the Tamagotchi craze. These handheld digital pets, originally released by Bandai, became an instant overnight success. This little handheld device had a black and white pixelated screen and was home to a digital pet, To help your Tamagotchi grow, you need to feed it, nurse it back to health, and play games with it. More characters were introduced as the game grew in popularity. Eventually, Bandai created a sort of Tamagotchi universe, making a film, Nintendo games, and other merchandise.
Just like most crazes, Tamagotchi started to lose its relevance over time, especially with the release of other similar games. Yet, in the last year or so, there has been a revival. Many nostalgic young people have now started to play it again. Tamagotchi has had collaborations with other characters like Hello Kitty and K-Pop groups like XG. These days, tamagotchi are even seen as a fashion statement, with many girls attaching them to their bags and belts.
With the rising popularity of Tamagotchi comes a bunch of Tamagotchi-themed events across the city.
Tamagotchi Pop up Store
From July 25 to August 28, there is a special Tamagotchi pop-up at Shibuya Sakura Stage. You can get your hands on limited edition merchandise as well as the presale for the newest device known as “Tamagotchi Connection” (for ¥3960). Some of the most notable items on sale here include badges, stickers, and plushies. Those who purchase one or more products will get a special “Tama Sticker,” and those who spend over ¥6600 will receive a limited edition Tamagotchi-themed acrylic stand.
Luckily, you don’t need to reverse to enter this pop-up shop, but we do recommend going as close to opening time as possible to avoid disappointment.
After wrapping up in Tokyo, this pop-up store will be going across the country to Osaka, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Nagoya, and Sendai.

Tamagotchi Gachapon
If you are not in Tokyo for the pop-up event, you can always find Tamagotchi merchandise elsewhere. Currently, there are a lot of Tamagotchi-themed Gachapon machines, especially on the top floor of Shibuya 109. There are a few different ones to choose from, including ones that have Tamagotchi rings, key rings of the most popular characters, and much more. It is also worth checking out one of the many Gashapon Department Stores.

Where else to buy Tamagotchi Goods
There are other places you should check out if you are on the hunt for Tamagotchi goods. One place is Spinns in Shibuya 109; this Gen-Z fashion store currently has a shelf filled with Tamagotchi plush key rings, card holders, and stickers. Another suggestion is to go to a Village Vanguard and Kiddy Land in Harajuku; they are likely to have a section dedicated to similar Tamagotchi products. If none of those work out, then head to Akihabara or Nakano Broadway, the areas most known for gaming stores and anime goods.
