Contents

After a long day in the city, sometimes the best way to decompress and relax is to have a drink. Tokyo is overflowing with amazing cocktail bars, some of which you may not even know about yet. Here’s a list of five trendy Tokyo bars that are worth stopping by.

WALL Aoyama

This secret bar in Aoyama is the latest viral sensation. As soon as you push the hidden door, you enter a stylish space decorated with art and lush greenery. The inside space, with its dim lights, bright neon light, and concrete tables, offers a more intimate atmosphere, whereas the outdoor terrace has a more lively and bright feel.

On the menu are fresh fruit seasonal cocktails as well as Wall’s other signature cocktails. If you fancy something other than cocktails, there is beer, soft drinks, and a fine selection of wines. Most alcoholic drinks cost over ¥1000 so it is fair to say that this bar is on the more expensive side. You can also enjoy some light bites and a complimentary snack.

TENCUPS

Tucked away in one of the quieter streets of Shibuya is TENCUPS, a bar on the bottom of the Tokyu Stay Minamiguchi Hotel. This hidden gem, with its modern and minimalistic interior, is a great place to stop by if you are looking for somewhere with a chill vibe and delicious drinks. It also has quite a bit of seating, so it is good for those coming with a group. To further enhance the atmosphere, there is live music from time to time. Make sure to check the official website for more details about these live events.

Signature cocktails include the Eggspresso Martini and Satay of The Gods. Each cocktail is around ¥14000 to ¥1600. Other drink options include craft beers, wine, mocktails and soft drinks. There are also some light bites and desserts on offer.

Trunk Lounge

The Trunk Lounge is located inside Shibuya’s Trunk Hotel. It is not only for hotel guests but also for locals who want to connect with other people while enjoying a nice drink. At the bar, you can get anything from a high-quality glass of wine to local Japanese beer. For cocktail lovers, there is an extensive choice, including Highland Highball, Nutty Brew, and the Lounge Secret. For something that you cannot get anywhere else, try Getting Trunk, a cocktail that embodies the ‘local first’ concept of the bar and tastes like roasted green tea. All alcoholic drinks start at just over ¥1000.

Swig Tokyo

Swig Tokyo is a small bar in Shibuya full of charm, community, and, of course, cocktails. It is the perfect place to go to unwind after a long day and enjoy a drink with friends and locals. On the weekend, this bar is filled with chatter and laughter as tourists and locals come together to create a vibrant atmosphere. For drinks, you will find everything from classic cocktails to Japanese liqueurs. Drinks start at around ¥1000. The staff also has great knowledge, so make sure to ask them for recommendations.

Whales of August

For a unique cocktail drinking experience, go to Whales of August. This speakeasy-style bar, located in Shibuya, serves movie-themed cocktails. Although there is a ¥500 seating charge, it is definitely worth it, even if you just end up having one drink. Make sure to bring cash as a backup.

On the menu you will see a long list of movie-themed cocktails including Beauty and the Beast, Kill Bill and My Neighbor Totoro. If you can’t find your favorite film on the list, you can request and get an original cocktail. Each cocktail is priced at around ¥800 to ¥1000. Some original ones may end up costing a little bit more. Keep in mind that the scarier the film is, the stronger the drink will be.
