Shopping for essentials can get pricey, but Tokyo’s discount stores offer quality at low prices. The 100 yen shops, like CanDo, Seria, Lawson100, and especially DAISO, are favourites. DAISO is renowned for its household items, beauty supplies, and food products.

Daiso has all your need to keep the kids entertained this summer, from cooling accessories to toys perfect for outdoor summer activities!

Beat the Summer Heat with Kakigori Supplies from Daiso

One of the most beloved summer treats in Japan is kakigori (かきごおり), a refreshing shaved ice dessert topped with sweet syrup.

At Daiso, you can find all the essentials to create this traditional Japanese treat at home. Here’s what you need:
Kakigori Machine
Daiso currently has a Manual Shaved Ice Machine for just 550 yen. It is super easy to operate and safe for your kids to try too.

Ice containers and Bowls
Although any cup or bowl can be used for kakigori, Daiso also sells the perfect-shaped plastic bowls for just 110 yen, usually found next to the machines and syrups.

Syrups:
The syrups turn your shaved ice into the perfect treat. Daiso sells several popular colours and flavours for just 108 yen per bottle.

Red = Strawberry (いちご)
Yellow = Lemon (レモン)
Green = Melon (メロン)
Blue = Blue Hawaii (ブルーハワイ)
Orange = Mango Milk (マンゴーミルク)

TIP: To make the shaved ice, the instructions recommend using a solid block of ice under 9.5cm in diameter and 3.5cm in height rather than individual ice cubes from a tray as it will not come out as fluffy and could potentially damage the blade. Most users freeze a small amount of water in a circular container.

DIY Popsicle Making Kits at Daiso

Another way to keep the kids cool with ice treats in Tokyo this summer is to create your own popsicles!

Daiso has a variety of popsicle-making supplies including some cute character-shaped popsicle makers like Winnie the Pooh of Mickey Mouse.

They also have regular popsicle-making containers. These items are also only 110 yen, easy to clean and reusable! By incorporating these ice-cold food products from Daiso into your summer plans, you can create fun and memorable experiences for your kids without breaking the bank.

Portable Cooling Supplies for Kids in Summer

Keeping kids cool during the sweltering summer months can be a challenge especially as the humidity rises, but Daiso’s cool neck bands offer an easy and affordable solution.

These neck rings are filled with a special cooling gel that stays cold for hours, providing instant relief from the heat. They simply need to be refrigerated for a few hours or placed in the freezer for less time. Instructions on cooling times are written on the packaging in both Japanese and English. There are a variety of colours, although stock may differ between stores, and will only cost 550. Sizing ranges from Small to XL so be sure to check for the right one. For reference, my 8-year-old daughter comfortably fits the size M and I fit an XL as a plus-sized mum.

Another option for keeping cool in Tokyo during Summer is Daiso’s range of electric hand-held fans.

Their Portable Mini USB Fans are compact and perfect for travel, outdoor adventures, or journeys to and from school. The mini fans are lightweight and easy to carry around. They can be charged via USB, come in several colours (yellow, pink, blue, black) and are only 330 yen.

Traditional and Waterproof Japanese Fans

団扇 or “uchiwa, ” is the well-known traditional Japanese fan. It is a timeless way to stay cool during the summer months here in Japan and at Daiso, there is often a vast selection of prints to choose from.

These fans are beautifully designed with traditional Japanese patterns and motifs, perfect for souvenirs and cooling down.

Daiso even sells plastic, waterproof fans that are ideal for poolside or beach use. They are durable and amazingly easy to clean, not to mention the kids will love the assorted designs available including Disney, Sanrio, and Winnie the Pooh characters.

Body Wipes for Refreshing

Another popular item for refreshing the body during Japan’s sizzling summer months is Body Wipes. Daiso body wipes are a must-have in every parent’s bag, both for yourself and for the kids! These wipes are infused with cooling agents that provide an instantly refreshing feel, as well as clean up any sweat or grime from your summer adventures. They are gentle and safe for children to use.

Daiso has a variety of wipes for 110 yen, some with lemon or crisp mint scent. The kids will surely love the character-themed packaging of Pompompurrin and other Sanrio characters.

Cooling sprays are also another option that are portable and easy to keep in the kids backpacks.

There are several options for cooling sprays, and most are priced at 220 yen per can.

Summer Attire for Kids from Daiso:

Beach Sandals
Yes, Daiso even offers affordable kids’ footwear for summer. Depending on where you are from, this style of summer footwear will have various names (Flip Flops, Jandals, Sandals) but at Daiso, these are called Beach Sandals and are a summer essential for your little ones’ feet. They have a variety of colours, patterns, and styles for your kids to choose from.

Sizing ranges from 15cm (smallest child size) to 28cm (Adult) and usually only 110 yen for most choices.

Bug-Related Items for Kids

Another typical Japanese Summer activity for children includes the capturing of insects like grasshoppers, beetles, and butterflies. For curious kids who love exploring nature and discovering insects, Daiso offers a variety of fun and educational bug-related items. These products are perfect for capturing the cutest or creepiest of Japanese insects.

Bug Catch Nets
Bug catch nets are an essential tool for kids who enjoy exploring the outdoors and observing insects up close. Daiso has long handled bug-catching nets in blue and green, or smaller nets with extendable handles

Both styles are only 110 yen. Using these nets, your children can safely catch and release insects in the outdoors.

Bug Observation Containers
If your kids want to keep looking at their catch for longer, consider one of the many bug observation containers from Daiso.

These provide a safe place for your kids to observe the insects through the transparent plastic without opening the lid, and the ventilation holes ensure the bugs can still breathe. Pricing for these bug containers ranges from 110 yen for the small, basic containers to 330 yen for the larger styles.

Kabutomushi (かぶとむし)
Across many of the insect items in Daiso, you will find the same insect pictured repeatedly, The Japanese rhinoceros beetle or “kabutomushi” (かぶとむし). These insects are particularly fascinating as many Japanese children have kept these beetles as pets! Yes, pets, and better yet, Daiso provides all the necessary items for housing and feeding them.

There are many types of beetle jelly cups to choose from, nutrient-enriched water to keep them healthy and items like wood shavings and small logs to fill their enclosures.

Insect Repellent Items

For those families who feel bugs should stay outdoors and preferably as far away as possible, Daiso also has that covered. Mosquitos are one of the biggest pests across Japan in Summer, even in Tokyo. They can be a real nuisance and their bites can leave the kids feeling uncomfortably itchy. To prevent bites, Daiso sells a range of Mosquito repellent products under the Aroma Range.

Aroma Bands, infused with different oils and scents to repel insects, are commonly found at Daiso in Summer for 110 yen. For the kids, they have colourful choices of animal or fruit-shaped rubber bands that are meant to be effective at repelling insects for 6 to 8 hours when worn on the wrist or ankle. These are 110 yen for a packet of eight.

For longer protection, they also sell Aroma bands for 220 yen that are worn around the wrist like a bracelet, and you connect the clip on top.

There are also packs of animal-themed insect repellent stickers that are 110 yen for 8 stickers.

Bubble blowing is a timeless summer activity that kids of all ages enjoy. Daiso offers a variety of bubble-blowing supplies that are both affordable and fun. Blow-Up Swimming Pools and Pool Toys
When it comes to beating the summer heat, nothing beats a cool dip in a pool. Daiso’s blow-up swimming pools and pool toys are ideal for small spaces and provide endless entertainment for kids.

I found two different-sized blow-up paddling pools in Daiso for 550 yen each. I brought the brown and white one for my daughter to enjoy some cooling water fun on our apartment balcony. It has a drain at the bottom making it easy to empty.

Beach Toys
If you are heading to the beach this Summer, Daiso’s beach toys are a must-have.

These toys are perfect for building sandcastles, digging up shells and enjoying the seaside with family. You can find sandcastle-making kits that include buckets, shovels, and moulds ready to go. My favourite are the plastic ice cream cones!

If swimming in a pool is more convenient for you, Daiso also sells many inflatable pool toys ranging from 110 yen to 330 yen and will be sure to provide hours of aquatic fun.
