5 Mexican Restaurants to Try in Tokyo

Contents

It is no secret that Tokyo is home to an uncountable number of amazing restaurants. Whatever type of food you are craving, whether it’s Japanese or international, you are sure to find it somewhere. Mexican cuisine is no different. Although some may say there aren’t many Mexican restaurants in the city, there is still a solid range to choose from. From those with a casual and authentic feel to those that boast spectacular views of the city, here are five Mexican restaurants to try in Tokyo.

Junkadelic

For somewhere which has a laid-back and local feel, Junkadelic is the place for you. This lively restaurant in the heart of Nakameguro is mainly known for its great-tasting Tex-Mex (Texas-style Mexican food). On the menu, you will find a few different appetizers and mains, which include classic cuisine such as burritos, enchiladas and tacos. In terms of drinks, there are different types of frozen margaritas, mojito, tequilas and even hot cocktails.

You can expect to pay around ¥2,000 to ¥3,000 for a main, side and drink. This price is definitely worth it given the portion size and quality of the food. Many people choose to go here for a casual date night or to catch up with friends, given its vibrant atmosphere.

Junkadelic is by far one of the most popular restaurants in Nakameguro. Given the restaurant itself isn’t that big, you can expect a queue to get in. This is especially the case on evenings and weekends. Although you can’t reserve a table online in advance, you can by phone.

Hacienda del cielo

Daikanyama is known for being one of Tokyo’s most trendy areas. Here is where you will find Hacienda del Cielo, a rather luxurious Mexican restaurant. Located on the ninth floor, this restaurant not only has delicious food offerings but also an incredible, unobstructed view of the city. Regardless of whether you are sitting inside admiring the chandelier modelled after a “feathered serpent” or are outside on the terrace taking in that view, you are sure to have an unforgettable experience. It is no wonder that so many people come here to celebrate special occasions or have a fancy date night.

On the grand menu, you will find a varied selection of nachos, tostadas, platillo, tacos, fajitas, and more. Prices for individual dishes start at around ¥630 and go up to around ¥4180, making it the most expensive restaurant on this list. That said, they do have a reasonably priced lunch set.

To avoid missing out on a table, especially at night, it is best to book in advance here.

Molé TAQUERIA Y BAR

Located on the 7th floor of the Shin-Marunouchi Building, Mole Taqueria Y Bar is a fairly new restaurant that prides itself on celebrating “taqueria culture.” The restaurant itself has a rather contemporary and chic feel. In addition, it boasts spectacular views of the Marunouchi area and beyond. In the summer, guests can even sit and eat outside on the terrace.

This restaurant mainly specializes in tacos, but there are a few side dishes available, including nachos and ensalada. On the dessert menu, you can find some unique dishes like a Pina Colada Mango parfait and Mexican Tiramisu. If you are a fan of cocktails, you are in luck! This restaurant and bar has a bunch of colorful and interesting ones, like a frozen lime margarita and a chocolate margarita.

The prices vary, with side dishes being between ¥380 and ¥840 and tacos being between ¥470 and ¥710 for one. Although the individual dishes are decently priced, the portions are not super filling. A few plates of tacos, some sides, a dessert, and a couple of cocktails can easily add up to around ¥10,000. It is worth noting that the lunch menu is quite a bit cheaper, as you can get a set that includes a main course, soup, and drink for ¥2000. Note that the restaurant only accepts cashless payments such as credit cards, e-money, and QR code payments.

Casa De Sarasa

Casa de Sarasa is a small Mexican restaurant and bar in Shibuya where you can enjoy authentic Mexican flavors and dishes. Named after DJ SARASA, who was inspired to start this business after his travels in Mexico, this restaurant’s main specialty is its tacos, which are made with corn tortillas and are gluten-free. From the classic pork tacos to veggie tacos, there is something for everyone, and the best part is that you can get 3 pieces for less than ¥1000. If you are wondering, the bar also boasts over 70 types of tequila, with a few rare ones thrown into the mix.

This restaurant has more of an intimate and personal feel to it, given that there is limited seating space and the staff is passionate about creating an authentic experience for those in Tokyo to enjoy.

TEXMEX FACTORY

Another popular Tex-Mex restaurant is TEXMEX Factory. Situated in Shibuya, near Tower Records, this vibrant, and rather pink, Mexican diner has an extensive menu consisting of nachos, platillos, burritos, sliders, fajitas, and, of course, tacos. The “Rosa Mexicana,” a taco made with a pink shell, is one of the most sought-after items on the menu. If you head over in the evening, you can also enjoy some original TEXMEX cocktails.

Although the prices on the grand menu are fairly reasonable, with one taco costing ¥490, you get an even better deal if you pop in during lunchtime. From 11:30am to 3:00 pm on weekdays, you can get all you can eat tacos and tacos bowls for only ¥1280. This price also includes free refills at the soup and drink bar.

The dining area is spacious, making this the best option for those in bigger groups. It is recommended that you make a reservation in advance here.
